Caption from Oceanus magazine, Vol. 47, No. 2, Pg. 4:
1. When sea level was lower 10,000 years ago, the Black Sea was a large freshwater “Black Lake,” dammed off from the salty Aegean Sea by the high-and-dry Bosphorus Sill.
2. As the ice age waned and sea levels rose, water spilled over the sill and into the lake. Some scientists proposed this might be the source of the Noah’s flood story.
3. New research suggests the water level in “Black Lake” was only 30 meters lower than it is today, not 80 meters as originally proposed, making the flooding far less catastrophic.
