This short-finned pilot whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus) was photographed while the Cascadia Research Collective field team was studying the ecology and behavior of toothed whales in the Hawaiian Islands. Short-finned pilot whales in Hawai‘i belong to a subgroup called the Naisa, a deep-diving predator of squid and fish. Highly social, they are most often found in family groups of 15-30 animals. These whales face many threats, including entanglement, ocean noise, contaminants, and being accidentally caught in commercial fishing gear as by-catch. They are also hunted in some regions, particularly Japan and the Lesser Antilles. (NMFS permit #15530)
