Image of The Day caption:
Bigelow Laboratory and Dyer's Dock are shown in the upper left portion of this historical photo of Woods Hole, as ferry to Martha's Vineyard is pulling into the terminus of the Old Colony Railroad line. In the summer of 1932, the village of Woods Hole was emerging as a hub of scientific activity focused on the ocean. The Marine Biological Laboratory was already established, and WHOI was entering its first full year of research. WHOI's facilities later expanded considerably during World War II in response to military needs.
