Image of The Day caption:
Drew Smith, a junior at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, is spending the fall semester with the Alvin group at WHOI working on several electrical components used on the submersible during deep-sea research dives. Among the enhancements on the human occupied vehicle, currently undergoing a multi-year upgrade, is improved live video footage using Alvin's external cameras. The cameras, along with bigger viewports, will improve scientists' views of the seafloor. For Smith, who is 21 and considering a career in ocean engineering, the experience has been rewarding. "I love going into WHOI and spending my day alongside people who are warm and inviting, but passionate about their work," Smith said.
