Camper's suction sampling device turned out not to be well suited for the rocky terrain on the seafloor that scientists found at this location on the Gakkel Ridge. So they improvised, attaching a hose dangling down from the suction sample to nose into crevices between rocks. It worked fine, but it is easily snagged by rocks, and it was lost at sea. WHOI engineer found more hose and re-rigged it for the next dive. It served its purpose well, but also never made it back. So WHOI engineer John Kemp rigged up a third piece of hosing for Camper's next dive, which he found who knows where? "I have a little stash where I squirrel them (pieces of hose) away," Kemp said. But he won't tell scientists where his stash is or how many hose pieces he has left in it.
