Image Of the Day caption:
Marine biologist Darlene Ketten points to CT scans of a whale head, indicating its earbones. Ketten, an expert on marine mammal hearing and ears, examined the heads of two rarely seen True's beaked whales that were found dead on a Long Island beach in January. In the WHOI Marine Mammal Center's Computerized Scanning and Imaging and necropsy facilities, she used biomedical imaging, forensic science and dissection to learn more about the rare species and to search for clues to what killed the two whales.
