Image Of the Day caption:
WHOI Director of Research Larry Madin led a procession of WHOI scientists at the commencement of MIT-WHOI Joint Program graduate students in June. The wooden ship's belaying pins that Madin and others in the procession carried are WHOI's nautical version of the academic mace that traditionally appears in commencement ceremonies. Every five years, Joint Program graduates march in a cermony at WHOI in addition to the one held each spring at MIT. This year, 16 graduates who defended their dissertation in the past year and 18 alumni who completed their work between 2010 and 2014 marched in commencement at WHOI.
