Image of The Day caption:
WHOI biologist Judith McDowell measures respiration of lobster larvae in her lab in about 1986. Since the 1970s she has done landmark research on lobster biology and how contaminants affect shellfish and marine ecosystems, while tirelessly working in support of education. WHOI's first female associate dean of graduate programs (1997-2006), McDowell oversaw the Institution's students and has supervised numerous graduate students and post-docs of her own. She was named a Pew Fellow for Conservation and the Environment in 1995, is currently chair of the Biology Department, director of the Woods Hole Sea Grant program, and serves on national and international committeesespecially those concerning ocean contaminants and pollution.
