Image Of the Day caption:
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution President & Director Susan Avery checks out the sphere of the newly remodeled Alvin with Deep Submergence Vehicle expedition leader Bruce Strickrott. Built in 1964 as one of the worlds first deep-ocean submersibles, Alvin is the only human-occupied vehicle (HOV) in the U.S. research fleet. In the spring of 2013, WHOI engineers completed a total overhaul of the vehicle that included design, testing, and installation of a larger personnel sphere.
