Image Of the Day caption:
Dan Chamberlain, a visiting student from Northeastern University working in WHOI geologist Jeff Donnelly's lab, examines a coastal pond sediment core that he split in half to expose layers of mud and sand deposited over time. Donnelly uses layers of sediment that storms wash into the ponds to shed light on intense storms of the past, including the history of hurricanes in New York City. Donnelly is part of a research team that received a grant from the MacArthur Foundation to study climate change effects, including coastal flooding, in Massachusetts and to develop adaptation solutions for coastal communities.
