WHOI engineer Anthony Tarantino explains the design and operation of the Human Occupied Vehicle DEEPSEA CHALLENGER to visitors during a recent WHOI public event, Deep Ocean Exploration: Trenches. DEEPSEA CHALLENGER was built by explorer and filmmaker James Cameron to reach the deepest parts of the ocean, including Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench. In March 2012, Cameron used the vehicle to set a record for the deepest solo dive.
