At a time of year when people are more likely to think about avoiding cold weather, WHOI's Carin Ashjian is headed north of the Arctic Circle aboard the U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker Healy. On November 14, after pushing through the tail of a storm that lashed them with 40-foot waves and coated the ship with ice, the team made their first encounter with sea ice. The goal of the 40-day trip is to study the physics, chemistry, and biology of the Bering and Chukchi Seas at the onset of winter. Follow the cruise blog to learn about life on the ship and in the ocean.
