Image of The Day caption:
Two red-hulled icebreakers, the Laurence M. Gould (foreground) and the larger Nathaniel B. Palmer, both frequently used by WHOI researchers, docked in Chile between expeditions in spring 2011. WHOI researcher Emily Peacock spent two months that year aboard the Palmer with scientists studying climate variability and predictability in Antarctica. Peacock analyzed water samples with an instrument that counts and takes images of phytoplankton cells for studies by WHOI biologist Sam Laney. Also on the cruise was WHOI engineer Jim Ryder, who recovered moorings placed the previous year.
