The new autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) Clio is the first AUV specifically designed to collect both biological and chemical samples from the ocean. The project's principal investigatorsengineers Mike Jakuba of WHOI (right) and John Breier of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (left), and WHOI biogeochemist Mak Saito (center)pose with the vehicle following its successful sea trials off the New England coast in July. Clio increases the efficiency of biological sampling and reduces the time and cost of global biogeochemical surveys, which are necessary to understand the marine food web and the role of the ocean in shaping Earth's climate.
