Image Of the Day caption:
WHOI engineering assistant Cody Meissner packed synthetic line in the WHOI Rigging Shop recently for a deployment, scheduled for autumn 2017, of an Ocean Observatories Initiative Global Array surface mooring in the Southern Ocean. Successful mooring deployments often start months before a research cruise and far from the GPS coordinates that scientists choose to place their instruments. The mooring design requires 2.5 miles of synthetic line, all of which must be packed by hand in similar bins, so that it will feed directly out of the containers without tangling.
