Bostwick ("Buck") Ketchum (1912-1982) served WHOI for more than forty years, studying topics from ocean physics to biology, but focused much of his attention on the coastal zone and human impacts. As associate director in 1962 he helped break ground for a new Laboratory of Marine Sciences--now Redfield Laboratory--to house the biology and chemistry departments. WHOI established the Bostwick H. Ketchum Award in 1983 to honor oceanographers who exemplify innovative coastal research and scientific leadership and who link coastal research and societal issues. On April 28 WHOI will present the fifteenth Ketchum award, to aquatic ecologist James Cloern of the U.S. Geological Survey.
