Biofouling can be a serious problem for oceanographic equipment that spends any amount of time at the surface or in the upper ocean and was one of the reasons this motorized profiler has to be removed from its mooring every six months. Profilers "crawl" up and down the mooring wire to make measurements of ocean currents and water properties. WHOI engineers John Lund (left) and James Kuo recovered the profiler after it spent five and a half months at sea, during which time it completed 2,648 profiles. It will be refurbished and recalibrated before being redeployed.
