It's not every day that a new ice-strengthened ship visits Woods Hole. In August, R/V Sikuliaq, a ship capable of breaking ice up to 2.5 feet thick, spent several weeks at WHOI before continuing its inaugural voyage to its homeport in Seward, Alaska, in early September. Here, (left to right) WHOI Vice President for Marine Facilities and Operations Robert Munier, U.S. Rep. William Keating (D-Mass.), WHOI Executive Vice President and Director of Research Larry Madin, and National Science Foundation (NSF) Assistant Director of the Directorate for Geosciences Roger Wakimoto pause on the gangway during a tour. The ship is owned by NSF and operated by the University of Alaska Fairbanks School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences.
