Image of the Day caption:
WHOI mooring operations specialist Jim Ryder secures a surface buoy to the deck of RV Knorr during a cruise to recover instruments deployed in October 2011 as part of the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI). The deployment was a test of new equipment designed to gather and transmit data about the North Atlantic Ocean at the edge of the continental shelf, a notoriously harsh and difficult place to work. Instruments like those that were tested will eventually form the backbone of OOI's Coastal and Global Scale Nodes, scheduled to be implemented in 2013.
