Crates and bins of science gear from WHOI and five other institutions were stacked up outside a research warehouse at the airport in Resolute Bay, Canada, in April 2007. Every bit of gear was intended to survive in the frigid Arctic weather, so the outdoor storage was an advance taste of reality. One of WHOI's two ice-tethered profilers (ITP) was eventually deployed at the North Pole Environmental Observatory for measurements of the water properties beneath the ice of the Arctic Ocean. But logistical problems forced research associate Rick Krishfield to leave one ITP in Resolute Bay for pickup and deployment this summer during an expedition to the Beaufort Gyre.
