Linder set up seismic stations on drifting ice floes during this expedition with seismologist Vera Schlindwein of the Alfred Wegener Institute in Germany, to record small earthquakes and volcanic activity on the Gakkel Ridge. To orient their equipment properly, she is asking which way is north, something which is difficutlt to determine by sight in the foggy, featureless Arctic. "The best thing about the trip is that it gave me the possibility to get to a such a remote place as the high Arctic. I would have never imagined that ice floes contain so many melt ponds on their surface. Just to be out there in the middle of nowhere, only surrounded by ice and hear no sound at all but the wind, was a experience I will never forget. To be honest, I think I had the most interesting work of all graduate students on board, but don't tell anybody."
