WHOI engineer Craig Marquette and Coastal Research Vessel (CRV) Tioga mate Ian Hanley prepare to deploy a Remote Environmental Monitoring Unit (REMUS) as 2010 Ocean Science Journalism Fellows look on during a day cruise off Nauset Beach. Physical oceanographers Glen Gawarkiewicz, and Anthony Kirincich were using the REMUS vehicle in their ongoing study of coastal currents in waters off the Outer Cape. REMUS vehicles are low-cost autonomous underwater vehicles designed by the Oceanographic Systems Lab to operate with a simple laptop computer and can be used as platforms for a variety of sensors and instruments.
