Dismantling six sleeping tents, our cook tent, the "Internet cafe"-plus packing scientists' instruments and our own gear then carrying it to our icy "helicopter pad"-took several hours. We were ready to go for the 8:30 a.m. pick up. But when Sarah called to check if it was coming, we learned of mechanical problems. Kristin got out the dried apples, Mark dug into the cheese crackers and we relaxed for a half hour (for bonus points, find all five people nestled in the gear). Then, Chris Linder spotted something on the horizon.
Image of The Day caption:
After dismantling six sleeping tents, a cook tent, and packing instruments and gear, WHOI and University of Washington scientists (who had spent weeks working on Greenland's ice sheet) waited for their ride back into the town of Ilulissat. Delays caused them to hunker down, dig out the snacks, and relax while nestled in their gear. After a half hour, they spotted something on the horizon. A bird? A plane? No, a huge helicopter!
