Caption from Oceanus magazine, Vol. 51, No. 2, pg. 23:
The scientists found that water spilled into moulins, or vertical conduits through the ice, and was transported to the base of the ice sheet. This accumulating water eventually created a bulge that floated the ice sheet and exerted tension at the surface beneath the lake. Stress built up until it was relieved by a sudden large crack in the ice below the lake.
