It isn't often that WHOI or any other research institution welcomes a new research vessel to the fleet. On October 31, R/V Neil Armstrong set out from Anacortes, Wash., where it was constructed, for San Francisco on its inaugural voyage. The ship is currently waiting its turn to transit the Panama Canal. Once it passes through to the Caribbean side, it will turn north for Charleston, S.C., and eventually Woods Hole.
