Image of The Day caption:
On November 7, 2011, WHOI biologist Peter Wiebe was on board the National Science Foundation research vessel Lawrence M. Gould as the ship approached the dock at the Palmer Station Antarctic research facility. High winds and driving sleet forced the ship to wait in pack ice west of the station for conditions to improve before finally tying. The ship and its science crew were on a 31-day mission (pdf) to study salps and other zooplankton in the ocean off the coast of the West Antarctic Peninsula.
