Image of The Day caption:
Like a tiny town in a snowglobe visited by a huge red sleigh, Palmer Station, Antarctica (seen here in 2002), gets regular stopovers from the ice-strengthened research ship Laurence M. Gould bringing supplies and transporting scientists to and from the outpost. One of three U.S. research stations in Antarctica, Palmer is a Long-Term Ecological Research study area where scientists track the changing climate. WHOI scientists working in Antarctica have studied the continent's unique geology, ice organisms, and the ocean ecosystem.
