Schlindwein's team unpacks their gear on an ice floe dotted with azure blue melt ponds. Melt ponds form on top of sea ice in summer as the sun's heat melts the snow from the top down. They also make perfect parking spaces for helicopters, explained veteran Arctic pilot Sven Stenvall. The ice floes are all white, with no contrast to distinguish flat ice from tall ridges or hummocks that stick up and pose danger to the helicopter's back rotor blades. The pools are easily visible from the air, and they clearly don't stick up.
