Before today's test dive, WHOI biologist Tim Shank makes last-minute adjustments to Camper. The name is short for "camera and sampler," and those two items are particularly important to Shank, who wants to view communities of life around hydrothermal vents and collect samples of animal for future studies on their DNA. Shank studies how life evolved on the deep-sea floor and how different species of animals populate different regions in the ocean.
