Oden is almost like two ships. It has an inside and an outside, and custom keeps them separate. Outside, it may be cold and snowy. Inside, it's toasty. At the doors are coat racks, where people keep their winter jackets and exposure suits, and boot racks, where they change their heavy, steel-toed boots for shoes and slippers when they come inside. Since operations go around the clock, someone is always sleeping during the day. Posted signs near the crew's room say "No elephants!!!!!! Walk gently, people are sleeping." People respectfully tread softly and close doors gently.
