Mark fired up a Jiffy ice drill to prepare an 8-foot hole where he'll leave a seismometer, which measures cracking and movement. The deeper the hole the better, as melting over the next year will occur. Before reburying the instrument, he downloaded data from the previous year.

In July 2008, a team of four scientists from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the University of Washington returned to Greenland for their third year to learn how the island's ice sheet is disappearing. Here, WHOI geologist Mark Behn prepares to drill an 8-foot hole where he'll leave a seismometer, which measures cracking and movement. Before reburying the instrument, he downloaded data from the previous year.
