Camper also has hydraulically operated systems to collect samples of vent animals. "We really don't know what we're going to find at Arctic Ocean vents," said Hanu Singh. "So we had to design different kinds of samplers. At some hydrothermal vent sites, we have seen organisms that are not moving, such as clams. To sample those, Camper has a mechanism like a clam bucket or a scoop. At other hydrothermal vents, we've seen lots of moving organisms such as shrimp. For that case, we have a sampler that allows us to suction moving organisms into a container."
