Caption from 2023 WHOI Wall Calendar, June:
A sea bamboo (Ecklonia maxima) forest near Cape Town, South Africa. Ashland Aguilar, a research assistant in WHOI’s Bell Lab, was in the area for the NASA BioSCape Campaign and captured this photo on a recreational dive. During fieldwork, the team worked in similar environments, measuring how kelp reflects different wavelengths of light to help validate imagery from airborne sensors. This information will help scientists assess kelp forest health and understand its connection to changing ocean conditions. “There was so much diversity in the kelp forest,” Aguilar said, “Catsharks, cuttlefish, nudibranchs, brittle stars, cup corals, and fish.”
