Caption from 2025 WHOI Wall Calendar, Front Cover:
Nereid Under Ice (NUI), a hybrid remotely operated vehicle, surfaces in Kangerlussuaq Fjord, in western Greenland. WHOI research engineer Molly Curran took this photo during an expedition where NUI mapped the seafloor moraine and the 300-meter (984-foot) submerged face of the Kangerlussuup Sermia glacier, and gathered other data and samples. NUI was designed and built at WHOI to work in environments with floating ice and calving glaciers. The vehicle has a hairthin fiberoptic tether and can travel 20 kilometers (~12 miles) laterally underwater, while still receiving control signals and transmitting data and high-definition video back to the ship.
