Earth Day Image Of the Day caption:
As the science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke once pointed out, "How inappropriate to call this planet Earth, when clearly it is Ocean." The ocean is the planet's largest living space and one of the reasons why life exists on Earth at all. So this Earth Day we celebrate the entire diversity of life, above and below the surface, and the many reasons that make our planet a shining blue gem in the solar system.

A school of humpback snapper glows in the sunlight of South Brother Island of the Chagos Archipelago during a recent expedition to survey and sample the remote coral reefs for the first time. Reefs like this are just one stunning part of the interconnected ocean that is largely responsible for conditions making life on Earth possible. Even remote locations like Chagos are showing signs of change driven by human activity, reinforcing the fact that, as vast as the ocean may seem, our home is a pale blue dot deserving (and in need) of our care and attention.
