Caption from 2025 WHOI Wall Calendar, October:
A rare view of the Yoerger-Bradley-Walden hydrothermal vent field lit from behind. Alvin pilot Bruce Strickrott took this photo on a dive along the East Pacific Rise, a volcanically active area 1,100 nautical miles west of Costa Rica. As Strickrott piloted the human-occupied vehicle Alvin, he reached an area where lights from a camera system illuminated these sulfide towers. Strickrott noted that with Alvin’s exterior lights off, the submersible’s interior control panel lights, reflecting on the pilot window, make the image resemble an “eerie alien city in the deep.”
