WHOI engineer Jeff Pietro recovers a whale detection system near shipping lanes in the New York Bight area. Pietro is a member of WHOI’s Mooring Operations and Engineering Group, which has been collaborating closely with WHOI scientist Mark Baumgartner and his Robots4Whales program. The program uses a WHOI-developed digital acoustic monitoring instrument to record and detect the sounds of whales in real time—this helps ships avoid collisions and provides data for researchers. Pictured here is a custom-designed frame used to hold these instruments in the water.
