Caption from 2025 WHOI Wall Calendar, May:
A green turtle (Chelonia mydas) hatchling takes to sea for the first time on the shores of Poilão Island, part of the Bissagos Archipelago off the coast of Guinea-Bissau in West Africa. This small, uninhabited island is an important nesting site for sea turtles. It also holds deep spiritual significance for local tribes. Visitors must complete a sacred rite of passage to travel there. When WHOI postdoctoral investigator Francesco Ventura arrived to study the population dynamics of these turtles, he and the science party thanked the guardian spirit of the island for letting them study these majestic creatures.
