Caption from 2025 WHOI Wall Calendar, December:
A humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) dives near glaciers along the west side of the Antarctic Peninsula. WHOI scientist Catherine Walker was in the Antarctic measuring cliff heights aboard the National Geographic Resolution. Antarctica holds 90% of the world’s land ice and almost 70% of the world’s freshwater. Measuring the surface elevation and geometry of ice cliffs, and how they change over time, will help scientists predict the speed at which the freshwater will be released. This research is funded by the NASA Cryosphere program.
