Caption from 2025 WHOI Wall Calendar, February:
The polyp of an oval mushroom coral (Lobactis scutaria) in the coral nursery at the Maui Ocean Center in Ma’alaea, Maui, Hawai’i. MIT-WHOI Joint Program student Nadège Aoki and a team of WHOI scientists, engineers, students, and technicians led by WHOI scientists Aran Mooney and Amy Apprill spent two months at the nursery playing the sounds of healthy Hawaiian reefs to coral larvae to test whether it would induce them to settle. This method has shown promise in repopulating Caribbean reefs.
