This photo of Elizabeth Bigelow, wife of founding director of WHOI Henry Bigelow, was taken more than 60 years ago. The Bigelows were wed in 1906, a marriage that Henry Bigelow called in his biography "the outstanding event of my life." The pair spent more than six decades together as adventurers and friends, traveling everywhere from Newfoundland to the West Indies. At home in Concord, Mass., the Bigelows were known as courteous hosts. They worked to "make the visits exceedingly interesting for their guests," wrote colleague and friend Michael Graham in the July 1968 issue of Oceanus.
