Jerry Dean (foreground) and Joe Poirer carry a Vector Averaging Current Meter that had just been recovered from the Sargasso Sea, where it was attached to a mooring line as part of the PolyMODE array II. PolyMODE was a joint venture between the United States and the USSR that ran from 1973 to 1981. Its purpose was to gather data about eddies in the North Atlantic. The WHOI Buoy Group recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of its first mooring deployment.
