A 150-pound mass of copper wires, coaxial cable, connectors, and insulating jackets is guided by Alvin Electronics Technician and Pilot-in-Training Chris Lathan, who stands on top of the sub. The wires distribute power, data and control signals, video, and audio throughout the interior of Alvins 144-cubic-foot personnel sphere. It took about one year to build and test the wiring harness in an aluminum frame called the "birdcage", which exactly mimicked the interior of the sphere and from which it is easier to trouble shoot. The harness was then installed into the upgraded sub and connected by 14 electrical hull penetrators that distribute signals to and from the exterior of the sub.
