Image Of the Day caption:
Distributed temperature sensing (DTS) is a new technique for measuring temperature using fiber optic cable. Researchers from the labs of WHOI biologist Anne Cohen and UC Irvine's Kristen Davis recently deployed 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) of fiber optic cable at Dongsha Atoll in the South China Sea. The system measures temperature to within 0.01?C every 30 seconds at one-meter intervals. Dongsha Atoll is unique because the largest internal waves in the world sweep through the water there, bringing cool water up the forereef slope towards the reef.
