DSV Alvin floats through air instead of water, as it is off-loaded from R/V Atlantis. The country's deepest-diving human occupied submersible returned to the WHOI dock in July 2015 and is currently undergoing maintenance while its support vessel, R/V Atlantis, retrieves and deploys moorings and instruments for the Ocean Observatories Initiative. Visitors to a public event, the Woods Hole Science Stroll, were able to tour the dock and see WHOI's robotic vehicles, including Alvin, ashorea rare location for the hard-working sub.
