Notes
Date is approximate. The Autonomous Benthic Explorer was the first deep AUV developed by WHOI engineers. With its ability to maintain a stable and constant altitude over changing seafloor topography, ABE can make detailed seafloor maps and collect high-resolution magnetic data. Caption from Down to the Sea for Science, pg. 154: Development of the Autonomous Benthic Explorer (ABE) brought important new capabilities to the U.S. Ocean-science community. Its second generation, called Sentry, is currently under construction.
