Caption from 2023 WHOI Wall Calendar, January:
Icebergs are biological hotspots. When the underside of an iceberg melts, the more buoyant freshwater rises, bringing nutrients to the surface, and causing plankton blooms. These blooms—often occurring in low-nutrient areas—attract fish and other ocean life. WHOI glaciologist Sarah Das took this picture of seabirds flocking in to hunt from a boat in Disko Bay on the Ilulissat Icefjord. Some of the largest and most frequent iceberg calving events in Western Greenland occur in this bay, mostly from the enormous and fast-flowing Jakobshavn Glacier. Lore has it that the iceberg that sank RMS Titanic originated here.
