Caption from 2025 WHOI Wall Calendar, September:
A stream flows through the Arctic coastal plain of Alaska. In this region, near the Chukchi Sea, permafrost can reach hundreds of meters deep. WHOI postdoctoral scholar Roger Creel took this photo while hunting for tundra boulders, enigmatic rocks whose origin and path to the tundra are unknown. Creel and pictured colleagues—Phillip Wilson, University of Alaska Fairbanks, and Allie Balter-Kennedy, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory—will date samples from these boulders to help understand how Earth’s ice sheets have changed over the last 100,000 years. This research is funded by the Permafrost Coastal Systems Network.
