Winsor explains: "We can 'map' the water column by taking a lot of measurements with a CTD, an instrument that measures temperature, salinity, and pressure in the water column. So we come with our icebreaker. We stop for a station, and we take a CTD and lower it from the surface all the way to the bottom and up again. When it travels down, we measure temperature, salinity, and pressure. And on the way up, we can we can stop at discrete depths and close bottles that are suspended on this instrument. We can actually capture water samples from different depths in the ocean, bring them up onboard, and analyze them in the lab onboard."
