The Swedish Polar Research Secretariat requires vessels that go north of 82dg 30'N to carry a doctor on board. Below that latitude, ships are still in range of helicopters that can evacuate patients in an emergency back to land to receive medical attention. Our doctor was Krister Ekblad (above). His mission was to take care of minor medical situations on board, so that Oden could continue its scientific mission. If the medical situation had been severe, he would have provided trauma care to stabilize patients until the ship could get within range of an emergency helicopter evacuation. "People ask me, 'What have you done? Nothing? That's boring!' " Ekblad said. To which he replies, "No, that's complete success." Ekblad is one of many important people who made this research cruise successful. The engine room and deck crews kept the ship and shipboard operations running smoothly, and Axel Meiton, information technology specialist, did the same for the ship's computers, databases, telephones, and e-mail.
